Avoiding Emotional Eating: How to Distract Yourself from Unhealthy Snacking

Just me and my cat today, hard at work at my desk. As long as he lays on my arm, I can’t use it to snack. ;)

Today isn’t easy for me. I’m stressed about my freelance work, I’m applying for full-time work with no call-backs yet, I’m still too sore to exercise much, and my friends are busy so it’s just me and the cat. I’m so tempted to gorge on candy, Pop Tarts, nachos, ice cream, or chili-cheese fries. Fortunately, we don’t have any of that in the house right now. I’m about to go run some errands and I know I’m going to want to stop at a fast food drive-thru, which I also know I don’t really want to do (see this post: Dropping the Drive-Thru). To help myself not eat my way through this stressful day, I’m making this list of distractions and reasons to avoid temptation. I hope it helps you too. Continue reading

“But I Don’t Like That…” or, How to Make a Healthy Snack Yummier

Healthy snack recipes often require some creative substitutions to suit personal preferences. Reader's Digest May issue screen capture.

I enjoy reading articles about  healthy recipes and snack ideas but I don’t always like eating them. Most “healthy” food recipes I come across contain ingredients that I just can’t stomach. Cottage cheese? No, thank you! Asparagus? It better be cooked in a ton of butter and salt so that it’s not bitter. I’m not being picky to be difficult; we just all have our personal tastes. Unfortunately, much of that personal taste runs counter to most healthy eating recommendations. I find myself needing to get creative in the kitchen to make things that are both healthy and appealing to me (for example, Leftover Easter Ham Recipe #2: Ham & Pepper Jack Quesadillas).

This problem was in the forefront of my mind when I was reading “4 Healthy Snacks for Weight Loss” in the May issue of Reader’s Digest. Let’s break these snacks down one by one:

Leftover Easter Ham Recipe #2: Ham & Pepper Jack Quesadillas

12 Apr

I’ve used leftover ham to make paninis before but since I’m trying to eat as little bread as possible, I thought I’d come up with a quesadilla instead.

Ham & Pepper Jack Quesadillas

Ham and Pepper Jack Quesadillas on corn tortillas with tomatoes, black olives, and a thin spread of BBQ sauce. Yum!

This combination of flavors came out so great! It almost reminded me of a Hawaiian-style pizza with Canadian bacon and pineapple. Ham is such a good meat to experiment with because it has such a sweet, distinct flavor. It lends itself well to many meals. These quesadillas are yummy and light. They make a great snack or lunch (depending on how many you eat, of course). [Also check out Leftover Easter Ham Recipe #1 and stay tuned for Leftover Easter Ham Recipe #3.]

Ingredients:

– thinly sliced leftover ham

– thinly sliced pepper jack cheese

– thinly sliced tomatoes (three slices per quesadilla)

– chopped black olives

– BBQ sauce

– small corn tortillas

The Snack Monster

5 Apr

Late at night, when a hush falls over the city and the moon rises high in the sky, a throaty howling screech pierces the calm. Ripping, shredding, gnawing noises cause people to wake from their sleep, cats to arch and hiss, and the sirens of the police start blaring.

I wish I could say it was an attack. A single, isolated event in which I was the victim. But the  dark truth is that last night I was not mauled by a monster, I became the monster…the snack monster. Just past midnight, I felt my hair frizzing, my eyes widening, my stomach grumbling, and my mouth salivating for anything I could find that was salty or sweet.
